Typing Speed Test
Find your typing speed in words per minute on school-friendly passages. Every letter turns green or red as you type, the on-screen keyboard shows the next key, and your personal best is saved.

Type faster with fewer mistakes
A one-minute test shows where you stand today. A few minutes of drills every day is how you get better.
Pick a test
Choose 30 seconds to 5 minutes, or finish a whole passage. Start with Easy in Class 3–5.
Start typing
Click the passage (or tap it on a phone) and type. The timer starts with your first key.
Follow the colours
Correct letters turn dark, mistakes turn red, and the red key on the keyboard shows what comes next.
Fix weak keys
The heatmap shows the keys you miss most. Turn them into a drill with one click.
How WPM is worked out
In typing tests a “word” means any 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, so long and short words are counted fairly.
Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Example: 450 characters in 2 minutes → 450 ÷ 5 = 90 words → 90 ÷ 2 = 45 WPM.
Net WPM, accuracy and CPM
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes)
45 gross WPM with 6 errors left unfixed in 2 minutes → 45 − 6 ÷ 2 = 42 net WPM.
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100, so mistakes you fix still count. CPM is correct characters per minute.
Touch typing: the home row
Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. The small bumps on F and J help you find them without looking.
Each finger reaches up and down from its home key and comes back. Thumbs press Space, and you hold Shift with the other hand from the letter you are typing.
Healthy typing habits
- Sit straight, feet flat, wrists level and relaxed.
- Keep the screen at eye level, about an arm’s length away.
- Look at the screen, not at your fingers.
- 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Speed goals to aim for
- Class 3–5: 10–20 WPM with 90%+ accuracy
- Class 6–8: 20–30 WPM
- Class 9–12: 30–40 WPM with 95%+ accuracy
These are practice goals, not official limits. Government typing tests in India, such as the SSC CHSL skill test, ask for 35 WPM in English.
