How percentage, grades and CGPA work

Board results use a few simple rules. Once you know them, you can check any marksheet yourself.

    Enter your marks

Type marks obtained and maximum marks for each subject. Leave marks blank for a paper that is still to come.

    Mark the 6th subject

Tick “Additional” for an optional or skill subject. It is kept out of the total but can count in Best of 5.

    Read your result

See total, percentage, grade per subject, CGPA, CGPA × 9.5, Best of 5, division and pass status.

    Plan and share

Set a target to see marks needed in the remaining papers, then download or share your result card.

    Percentage formula

    % = (Total obtained ÷ Total maximum) × 100

    Example: 425 out of 500 → 425 ÷ 500 × 100 = 85%. If a paper is out of 80, convert it the same way: 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%.

    CBSE 9-point grades

    Each subject gets a grade from its marks out of 100: A1 91–100 (GP 10), A2 81–90 (9), B1 71–80 (8), B2 61–70 (7), C1 51–60 (6), C2 41–50 (5), D 33–40 (4) and E 32 or below — needs improvement.

You need at least 33% in a subject to pass it.

    CGPA and the 9.5 rule

CGPA = sum of GPs of 5 main subjects ÷ 5

    Indicative % = CGPA × 9.5

    Grades A2, B1, A1, A2, A2 → (9 + 8 + 10 + 9 + 9) ÷ 5 = 9.0 → 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%. CBSE chose 9.5 because students in the 91–100 band averaged about 95%, and 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5.

    Best of five & division

Best of 5 takes your five highest subject scores — many colleges and schools use it for admissions, sometimes insisting that a language is one of the five.

State-board style division: Distinction 75%+, First 60%+, Second 45%+, Third 33%+ — awarded only when every subject is passed.

Good to know: CBSE marksheets now show marks and a grade for each subject, and the board does not declare an overall division or aggregate. Schools and colleges usually work out the percentage themselves — most often from the best five subjects. Schools that run exams on an ERP like Class ON App can generate these report cards automatically.
