Age as on

Admission age is counted on a cut-off date, not today.

Cut-off dates differ by state, board and school (31 March is common; some use 1 June, 31 July or 30 September). Always check your state’s latest admission notice.

How it works

The right class for the right age

Under NEP 2020 a child should be at least 6 years old to join Class 1. This calculator applies that rule to any cut-off date your state or school uses.

Enter the date of birth

Use the birth certificate date. Leave the name blank if you only need the age.

Pick session and cut-off

31 March of the session’s starting year is the default. Change it to match your state’s notice.

Read the eligible class

See the exact age, the class that fits, and how many days a child falls short of the next class.

NEP 2020 age rule

Class n → at least (n + 5) years

Pre-school: Nursery / Balvatika 1 at 3+, LKG / Balvatika 2 at 4+, UKG / Balvatika 3 at 5+. Then Class 1 at 6+, Class 2 at 7+ … Class 10 at 15+ and Class 12 at 17+, all counted in completed years on the cut-off date.

The 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure

  • Foundational (ages 3–8): 3 years of pre-school + Class 1–2
  • Preparatory (ages 8–11): Class 3–5
  • Middle (ages 11–14): Class 6–8
  • Secondary (ages 14–18): Class 9–12

How exact age is counted

Count whole years, then whole months, then the leftover days from the last “monthly birthday”. Example: born 14 Aug 2021, age on 31 Mar 2027 → 14 Aug 2026 is 5 years, 14 Mar 2027 is 7 more months, then 17 days → 5 years 7 months 17 days — eligible for UKG, not Class 1.

For admission desks: the “Date of birth between” column tells you instantly which birth dates fit each class for your cut-off — print it and keep it at the counter. Schools using Class ON App can run age checks automatically inside online admission forms.
